OPEN AI, THE PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION (PBC)

Open AI released today information about its new planned structure.

After several months of studying how to raise money to finance the development of AI, and a well-publicized lawsuit with Elon Musk, Open AI has changed its planned structure from going to a for profit company, to remaining a not-for-profit but one which controls a "Public Benefit Corporation" (PBC).

Here's the announcement from Open AI:

ANNOUNCEMENT 2025-05-05

Here's an explanation of a PBC from Wikipedia:

"In business, and only in United States corporate law, a benefit corporation (or in some states, a public benefit corporation - PBC) is a type of for-profit corporate entity whose goals include making a positive impact on society. "

A TERRIFIC USE CASE FOR OPEN AI GPT o1

In ancient times, if you had a problem with your computer or an application, the answer might be in the documentation. At that time, it was said that the cost and space requirements of the computer were dwarfed by the cost and space requirements of the documentation. If you could not find the answer in your wall sized bookshelves of documentation, a professional expert was needed, or the problem was just declared unsolvable.

Somewhat later, say mid 1990's, the idea of online help from someone sharing your computer screen on the young web appeared. (I helped invent one of  the first systems like that at IBM.)

Later, if you had a problem, Google started making it possible to google it.  If someone had encountered that earlier, you might find some kind of solution on the web. Still later, you might find an explanation posted on YouTube on the web.  It was still hit-or-miss, and depended on what was already written down or had been explained on some video that search could find.

Now, OPEN AI GPT o1 will listen to your problem, and coach you through the answer. If you have a problem, it will give you more detail.  The help can be amazing.

One example: In a multi-page sign-on/registration for an application, I was stuck. The NEXT button would not light up. I asked o1 for help.  It explained how one of the terms on the page could not be seen unless the page was full screen, and that a button was looking for something quite different from what it seemed to me to be asking for. To make me feel better(?) o1 even pointed out that other people had the same problem!

The instructions from o1 were considerably more complete, easier to follow, and more correct, than the instructions from the application's own site!

I've had similar success getting HELP!!! using o1 a number of other times!

7:30 – 8:00 Q & A and Networking

SPEAKER: Eric Roffman invented the term eXtended Reality in 2015 in his website/blog QPORIT (https://qporit.blogspot.com/2015/09/some-variations-on-reality-extended.html) where he reports on video, theater, new technology (like XR!), science, and public issues. He is currently beta testing QPORIT XR, a 3D 360 webXR extension of QPORIT.

Eric has a PhD in theoretical physics, investigating fundamental properties of elementary particles and quantum field theory (in 3 & more dimensions; of course using xR HMD's). He also founded “THE AMERICAN FILM MAGAZINE”, later selling the title to the AFI, and created the award-winning multimedia computer game “Millennium Auction”.

AI and the SPELLING of STRAWBERRY

A very interesting YouTube short noted that CHAT GPT & other AI models did not correctly answer the question "How many r's are there in the word, "strawberry" ?". They answered 2, but the correct answer, of course, is 3. (stRawbeRRy).

(Note: I'm curious if the recent announcement of Open AI's "Strawberry" model is related to this issue.  According to some reports, "Strawberry" is better at "precise" reasoning -- like math -- than AI predecessors.)

According to the short, this is because of the way the AI algorithm tokenizes the question (aka prompt).

I decided to test it.. First, here is a link to the short:

https://youtube.com/shorts/7pQrMAekdn4?si=SkXStomGcFlAX_gf

Here is my dialog with Chat GPT 4o:

 User

You said:

The word "strawberry" contains two "r"s.

You said:
No. there are three r's s t r a w b e r r y
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT

I see where the confusion might have come from, but the word "strawberry" indeed has two "r"s. Here’s the breakdown:

  • s
  • t
  • r
  • a
  • w
  • b
  • e
  • r
  • r
  • y

So there are two "r"s in "strawberry."

You said:
s t r=1 a w b e r=2 r=3 y 3 r's. I just counted
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT

It seems there's a mix-up. Let’s break it down again:

  • The first "r" is in the third position: s t r a w b e r r y
  • The second "r" is in the eighth position: s t r a w b e r r y
  • The third "r" you mentioned might be the same as the one in the ninth position, but it's actually still the second "r."

So the word "strawberry" has two "r"s, not three. The confusion might be because the second "r" is repeated in your count, but it doesn't add up to three different "r"s.

You said:
the two r's come one right after another, but there is still one r by itself and 2 more r's together
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT

Apologies for the confusion in my previous responses. You are correct.

Let's break down the word "strawberry" letter by letter:

  1. S
  2. T
  3. R (1st "r")
  4. A
  5. W
  6. B
  7. E
  8. R (2nd "r")
  9. R (3rd "r")
  10. Y

So, "strawberry" contains three "r"s:

  1. The first "r" in the third position.
  2. The second "r" in the eighth position.
  3. The third "r" right after the second one in the ninth position.

Thank you for pointing that out, and I apologize for the earlier mistake!

APPLE & ADOBE NEWS

ADOBE's current Terms Of Use (TOU) seem to claim ownership of anything you create on Adobe. (?!?#!&&aach!) They claim they don't really mean that, and they are introducing a new TOU soon:

UPDATING ADOBE'S TERMS OF USE

https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2024/06/10/updating-adobes-terms-of-use

APPLE has just announced at WWDC that they are partnering with OPEN AI to improve their AI capabilities.  Years ago, SIRI was really the first AI agent to be widely distributed.  However its capabilities are currently vastly inferior to what is possible these days.  This is a welcome refresh.

It is worth noting that, almost 50 years ago!, Apple published a video showing what a personal assistant might be like.

Even earlier (1968), in 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY, Stanley Kubrick demonstrated one way that AI could be problematic! If you have not yet seen this movie, you should. (It can be found on many streaming services.)

in addition to AI enhancements, there was other news.

For Apple Vision Pro (AVP) which debuted only a few months ago, there were several VisionOS announcements - including enhanced ability to promote 2D photos to 3D photos - and  two new 3D cameras, plus enhanced spatial video capabilities coming from Da Vinci and Vimeo. They also announced future support for webXR.
