THE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF
NOAH BAUMBACH'S MARRIAGE STORY

Noah Baumbach’s new film is about the rapid tangling and gradual untangling of impetuosity, resentment, and abiding love between a married couple negotiating their divorce and the custody of their son.

Adam Driver is Charlie, a 100-percent New York experimental theater director; Scarlett Johansson is Nicole, his principal actress and soon-to-be L.A.-based ex-wife.

Their “amicable” breakup devolves, one painful rash response and hostile counter-response at a time, into a legal battlefield, led on Nicole’s side by Laura Dern and on Charlie’s side by “nice” Alan Alda and “not-so-nice” Ray Liotta. With Merritt Wever and Julie Hagerty as Nicole’s sister and mom, and Azhy Robertson as their beloved son, Henry.

What is so remarkable about Marriage Story is its frank understanding of the emotional fluctuations between Charlie and Nicole: they are both short-sighted, both occasionally petty, both vindictive, and both loving. The film is as harrowing as it is hilarious as it is deeply moving.

“I grew up coming to the New York Film Festival with my parents. And it's where my first film Kicking and Screaming premiered 24 years ago,” said Baumbach. “I couldn't be more thrilled and proud that Marriage Story has been selected as Centerpiece of the NYFF. The 14-year-old me’s mind is blown; the 49-year-old me’s mind is also blown.”

Tickets for the 57th New York Film Festival will go on sale to the general public on September 8. Festival and VIP passes are on sale now and offer one of the earliest opportunities to purchase tickets and secure seats at some of the festival’s biggest events, including Opening Night.

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
MARTIN SCORSESE’S THE IRISHMAN

Based on Charles Brandt’s nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, it is a film about friendship and loyalty between men who commit unspeakable acts and turn on a dime against each other, and the possibility of redemption in a world where it seems as distant as the moon.

At the core of The Irishman are four great artists collectively hitting a new peak:

“It’s an incredible honor that The Irishman has been selected as the Opening Night of the New York Film Festival. I greatly admire the bold and visionary selections that the festival presents to audiences year after year,” said Martin Scorsese. “The festival is critical to bringing awareness to cinema from around the world. I am grateful to have the opportunity to premiere my new picture in New York alongside my wonderful cast and crew.”

ELON MUSK, NEURALINK, and the BRAIN-MACHINE INTERFACE VIDEO

Elon Musk has been outspoken on the dangers of AI.  With Neuralink, a company he owns, he is jumping into AI, hoping, he says, that by creating a direct link between the human brain and a computer, we can combine our powers. (This is, literally: "If you can't beat'm, join'm.")

In the following video, Musk and members of Neuralink discuss the current state of brain-computer interface science and design.

Basically:

The immediate goal of the project centers on helping patients with injuries such as damage to the spinal cord, and brain damage due to stroke that impairs muscle function.

Of course, both the benefits and the possible hazards of implanting an interface to a computer in the brain which has the power to "read minds" or commandeer a person's mind, are significant.  It has been explored in fiction. For example, this idea appeared in early Flash Gordon serials, and right now in the just published novel FALL by Neal Stephenson.

Here are some links to the video, Neuralink, and Elon Musk, plus an article from CNET about Neuralink:

NYFF 2019 CRITICS ACADEMY -- APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!

FILM AT LINCOLN CENTER & FILM COMMENT
 SEEK APPLICANTS
FOR THE EIGHTH ANNUAL
New York Film Festival
CRITICS ACADEMY

Film at Lincoln Center and Film Comment magazine announce a call for entries for the eighth Critics Academy, the annual workshop for aspiring film critics, taking place during the 57th New York Film Festival (September 27 – October 13).
The Critics Academy nurtures promising writers and provides a valuable platform to launch their writing. It was started in 2012 at the Locarno Film Festival and subsequently produced for the New York Film Festival that year. The program, originally designed in collaboration with IndieWire, continues to emphasize the importance of diversity in the world of film criticism, supporting and nurturing women and writers of color, though its purview remains expansive and all-inclusive.
Past participants have gone on to write for a wide range of print and online publications, including The AtlanticBrooklyn MagazineFilm CommentThe Guardian, Hyperallergic, IndieWire, L.A. WeeklyThe Los Angeles TimesNational ReviewNew RepublicThe New York Review of BooksPaper magazine, The Paris Review, Remezcla, Reverse Shot, Slant, Vice, The Village Voice, and Vulture, and some have become involved in film programming and publicity.
For the 2019 edition, 10 selected critics will again have the opportunity to attend NYFF press screenings and cover the festival in a variety of ways, from quick-turnaround film reviews to more in-depth articles and interviews for potential publication on Film Comment and beyond. Participants will partake in candid roundtable discussions with working critics and other members of the industry to put their work in context, and have the opportunity to workshop their writing in one-on-one sessions with editors from Film Comment.
Past guest speakers have included Melissa Anderson, Ina Diane Archer, Richard Brody, Teo Bugbee, Andrew Chan, Ashley Clark, K. Austin Collins, Ed Gonzalez, Mark Harris, Molly Haskell, Eric Hynes, Kent Jones, Eric Kohn, Dennis Lim, Aliza Ma, Wesley Morris, Mekado Murphy, Sheila O’Malley, Nick Pinkerton, B. Ruby Rich, Alison Willmore, Farihah Zaman, and many others.
Though the New York Film Festival Critics Academy is open to applicants outside the New York area, it unfortunately cannot provide travel or housing for the duration of the festival. While there is no specific age limit for applicants, the ideal candidate should have completed at least two years of college or concluded academic studies no more than five years ago.
The application process begins today; the deadline to send entries is Monday, August 19th.
Accepted critics will be notified the week of August 26th. Emphasis will be placed on strength of writing and a diversity of voices, backgrounds, and film interests.
Requirements:
Applicants must have completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate study or have no more than two years of experience creating critical and/or journalistic content about movies. They must demonstrate an interest in film criticism and/or film journalism as well as the ability to speak and write fluently in English.
Applications must include the following:
● CV: A basic, one-page resume
● Three articles or film reviews written in English. The critic should refrain from including lengthy academic papers or other scholarly materials that may not give an accurate reflection of the applicant’s capacity to succeed in this workshop.
● One sample of another writer’s piece of critical writing that the critic finds particularly compelling, intelligent, or provocative, with a short paragraph explaining why.
● An approximately 500-word statement of intent. Tell us about your background and why you would make an ideal candidate for the Critics Academy. Make sure to note any particular interests (genres, national cinemas, etc.). Passion, strong writing skills, and a deep knowledge of film history matter more than overall professional experience.
Please note that all Critics Academy members will be expected to take part in scheduled workshops from 2 – 5pm at Lincoln Center on Monday, September 23rd; Monday, September 30th; and Monday, October 7th. In addition, press screenings and events will be scheduled before and throughout this time.
Please send applications to criticsacademy@filmlinc.org.

Review: BURN THIS

The powerful recent Broadway revival of BURN THIS featured a fiercely energetic, brilliantly acted and directed, sharply written play... except for a disappointingly tired, “romantic novel” conclusion: An un-tamed, un-PC, tortured, charismatic, strange, spirited, loud, “dangerous” man encounters a beautiful, charming, confused, unhappy woman, who has a nice looking, rich, pleasant, devoted, but not ardent boyfriend. Guess who she chooses. Guess who gets tamed.

The (currently almost omnipresent – see below) actor, Adam Driver, plays Pale with skillful verbal and physical humor, agile physical stage-fighting, moment to moment instantaneous spectacular yet convincing emotional pivots, and incredible energy (eight times a week? Wow!). (Note… Pale’s accent landed somewhat confusingly the night I saw the play, varying from indeterminate, to Brooklyn, to Bronx, to Italian, to well-I’m-not-sure … though I heard that it was more spot-on for another performance… That’s the beauty of live theater, each show is different!)

Keri Russell plays beautiful, charming, and confused very well. The role of Anna, sadly, does not require the fierce murderess side of her skill-set that she employed so deftly in THE AMERICANS. The “romantic novel” plot is clearly not told by a female novelist with an interest in the woman’s emotions. Her role is somewhat underwritten.

David Furr, as the soon-to-be-ex, and Brandon Uranowitz as the roommate, were both excellent and executed their roles nicely.

The director, Michael Mayer,  stages the play in an interesting way, sometimes putting two characters far apart from each other so they are not even in the same field of view (at least from a seat close to the stage) – you see only one character at a time without turning your head. It requires you to focus, to study the character, as do lingering silent pauses in the dialog. Especially in the first act, Pale’s performance hits every possible laugh line hard, almost like a souped up Neil Simon comedy; while Anna seems to temper her performance of potentially funny lines, to mute their possible effect. The combination of these effects serves to enhance the humor while preventing the comedy from trivializing the characters.

One striking feature of the play (whose original production was in 87 with John Malkovich in the role of Pale) was its natural, matter-of-fact treatment of gay life. Anna is a choreographer, living with a gay advertising man and a gay dancer (whose death before the show begins is the catalyst for everything that follows). There is no mention of AIDS, which was beginning to attract serious attention by 1985 or so, and all of the characters in the play treat homosexuality as natural, although issues hover, concerning off-stage characters and their relation to the perished dancer. Did his family know he was gay? (There’s even a throw-away, momentary suggestion, quickly dismissed, that someone did know and deliberately caused his death.) The play takes it as natural and obvious (to anyone but the boy’s rural relatives), that a male dancer with a male Greek friend would be gay.

I’d wanted to see BURN THIS from the day of its first previews, but, unfortunately scheduling and previous commitments meant that I finally bought a ticket for its penultimate performance, Saturday night. And the theater gods were with me: THE HUDSON – a fine, older theater, with a nice lobby, some historic rooms, and far too few women’s rest rooms (not my problem, but I wanted to mention it) – was one of the few theaters performing on the night of the big blackout. (Possibly because it was further East on 44th street. There was one perceptible glitch in the lighting script which, in retrospect, may have been related to the returning of power in the neighborhood, but there was no other sign of trouble.) It was very comfortable inside.

I’m looking forward more than ever to see Adam Driver’s work, and I do want to see much more of Keri Russell, whose work in AMERICANS was extraordinary. She was very good here, but as I’ve said before, I'd love to see her cold ferocity brilliantly illuminate a modern interpretation of Lady Macbeth.

I came away from the evening immensely impressed by Adam Driver’s stage skills, by Lanford Wilson’s ability to write some powerfully interesting humor, and thankful that I got to see the play at all!

Preview (#1) - HIFF 2019 - HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Oct 10 - 14, 2019

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
BRIAN DE PALMA

ARTIST & POSTER
LEE KRASNER’S “VERNAL YELLOW”

THE DICK CAVETT ARTISTIC CHAMPION AWARD
FESTIVAL FOUNDER, TONI ROSS

BRIAN DE PALMA

The Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) will honor legendary director Brian De Palma with a Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 2019 festival along with a special screening to be announced closer to the date of one of his many award-winning films. De Palma will also participate in a “A Conversation With”  at the festival with Festival co-chair Alec Baldwin.

Brian De Palma is an American film director and screenwriter. Some of his notable directing credits include BLOW OUT, SCARFACE, THE UNTOUCHABLES, CASUALTIES OF WAR, CARLITO’S WAY, CARRIE and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

"Brian De Palma’s filmography suggests one word: excitement. Few directors in movie history have generated the kinds of feelings found in Brian’s films,” said HIFF Co-Chairman Alec Baldwin. “Although he often worked with big stars and great writers, Brian is responsible for most of the excitement in his films."

ARTIST LEE KRASNER’S “VERNAL YELLOW”

The Hamptons Film Festival selected the poster for the 2019 edition: Lee Krasner’s “Vernal Yellow” from her Solstice Series (1980, oil, collage on canvas, 150 x 178. Ludwig Collection). This painting, which uses cut-out fragments of figurative charcoal from the 1930s, as well as non-representational lithographs, was exhibited in 1980 at the Pace Gallery in New York.  The poster will debut later this Summer.

A legend of the 20th century abstract expressionism movement and one of the artist pioneers who moved out East to the Springs in East Hampton, Lee Krasner’s work spans over 60 years. Currently, the Barbican in London is exhibiting the first solo retrospective of her work in Europe in over 50 years, and her work is included in a group show called “Painters of the East End” exhibiting at Kasmin Gallery in NYC this summer.

Over the past 26 years, the Hamptons International Film Festival has grown immensely from its beginnings in 1993. The choice of Krasner’s “Vernal Yellow” for this year’s festival felt like a natural choice, as Krasner herself described her use of collage as way to revisit and refocus: “I go back on myself, into my own work, destroy it in some way and come up with a new thing… this seems to be a work process of mine… it’s a form of clarification… a form of growth.”

“Celebrating local artists each year by commissioning or choosing their art for our official festival poster has been a hallmark of the Hamptons Film Festival since the very first year in 1993,” said HIFF Executive Director Anne Chaisson. “In looking at the array of talented artists who have donated their work — including Julian Schnabel, Eric Fischl, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Bruce Weber, Bryan Hunt, Barbara Kruger, and John Alexander — we felt there was one grande dame whose work must be a part of this legacy: Lee Krasner.”

FESTIVAL FOUNDER, TONI ROSS

Toni Ross will be the recipient of this year’s “The Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award." This award was created in 2017 and first given to its namesake, Dick Cavett, to honor those in the creative arts who not only excel in their field, but who also support the arts and artists, particularly in film, television and related media.

Toni was the founding Chairman of the Board of HIFF in 1993 and for the ensuing five years, bringing to the organization a deep knowledge and passion for film, and a cultivation of artistic integrity outside of the fine arts.

Ross’ paintings, installations, and sculptures have been showcased around the world and have left an indelible mark on the East End as one of its most prolific artists.

A film studies graduate of Wesleyan University, Ross was instrumental in establishing the Wesleyan Cinema Archives, where she remains on the Board of Trustees. Her career includes work with several film production designers, most notably Philip Rosenberg and Mel Bourne.

As a social activist, Toni is also a founder of The Hayground School, where she has focused on the importance of diversity, removing barriers due to financial constraints and arts and culinary education.

Ross is also a restaurant entrepreneur, with five East End favorites including Nick & Toni's, and a supporter of Guild Hall, OLA, and Planned Parenthood, among other non-profit organizations. In a prescient move, Ross founded and curates the biennial series “Women Artists: Reshaping the Conversation” in East Hampton.

Previous recipients of “The Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award" include Cavett himself & Alan Alda.
