THE NEW META VR GLASSES & AI 3D INTERACTIVE VIDEO
The new META VR GLASSES occupy a new form factor midway between AR glasses and MR headsets.
There is one major technological innovation, and several interesting design choices behind this product.
Technologically, it uses an optical fiber to transmit information from the computer to the display. This faster transmission makes it possible to move the computing from the headset to a tethered block that can ride in a pocket or a belt, and allows weight to be removed from the glasses themselves.
An important design choice is to use a smaller FOV, cramming a large number of pixels into a smaller width. This makes the display narrower, but sharper. The narrower display, plus shifting more computing to the “puck” makes the glasses much, much lighter, and the whole thing way cheaper than an AVP.
The glasses also appear to be closely integrated with META’s AI offering, making VR applications more easily integrable with AI applications. This can speed up and reduce the cost of developing AI VR applications, and make new kinds of interactive applications possible.
However, unfortunately, the low FOV (70 degrees across) makes it difficult to create truly immersive applications. It is more like an IMAX than a truly immersive scene. On the other hand, it is a natural form factor for 3D flat AI video, where a video uses upscaling, depth information, and then conversion to 3D to create flat 3D videos. So, together with AI, 3D (flat) interactive videos are possible.
Meta VR glasses were introduced on Wednesday at META Connect, and will be available next Spring, priced, starting at 1,300.
