Here's another one of those interesting SNL's with the host also taking on the role of musical guest.  Miley Cyrus, of course, has just come off the twerking routine that grabbed headlines for a while.

A singer, actress, and even director, Miley became well known with the success of Hannah Montana. Check out her zillions of credits below.

Recap...

This was one of the finer SNL's.  Miley Cyrus was excellent in every sketch she played.  She is not especially funny, but is a fine actress, seamlessly fitting into each of many different roles. Her songs managed to transcend the usual destruction that the SNL mix seems to vent on most singers' music.  Wrecking Ball is a fine song.  And the music video (only a bit of which was shown and only a bit of which was parodied) is a modern artistic classic.

While there was little that was hilarious (the funniest sketch, I think, was a promo for a car's glove compartment, and the Weekend Update was -- except for the last sketch -- funnier than usual), almost every scene was amusing, interesting, and occasionally surprising.


COLD OPEN - NYC in 2045. Ruined. Cause: Miley Cyrus at VMA 2013. Ah! What trouble that caused! And she has the most extraordinary tongue!

MONOLOG - Miley is nicely self-aware.  As she demonstrates throughout the show, she is slightly vulgar in a most artistic way.

50 SHADES OF GREY (50 SOG) - Pairs of stars auditioning for 50 SOG. Amusing. Decent (not great) impressions.

GIRL FRIENDS TALK SHOW - Better than the usual version of this sketch. But why keep dumping on the fat girl? (Not only in this sketch.)

CYRUS AS HILLARY - Not bad. Cyrus has a new career doing Hillary?

MUSIC - Nice segment. WRECKING BALL is a terrific song with a very terrific music video. The parody of the video was funny, but the video itself (of which only a moment was shown) is a milestone in music videos.

WEEKEND UPDATE - Except for the last sketch (Bar Mitzvah Boy) this was consistently funny.

CHEERLEADERS & SPACE INVADERS - Good sketch.

MORNING IN MIAMI - Three TV anchors come to live for promos then go catatonic.  Amusing: Probably taken directly from life.

POETRY - Kind of a lame sketch, and the finale wimps out when Miley doesn't actually kiss the poet.
LAST NIGHT - Nerd who can't deal with overtures from sexy Miley.

The GAP commercial was the best real commercial

The GLOVE COMPARTMENT commercial was the best fake ad. And the funniest sketch in the show.
