SNL -- MAR 9, 2013 -- HOST: JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE with musical guest... JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
SNL -- MAR 9, 2013

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

HOST And! MUSICAL GUEST

http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/

Justin Timberlake has the unusual honor of being both the host and the musical guest on SNL. Fans waited in the cold and snow for tickets. According to reports, the waiting hordes had some support from SNL and JT himself with soup and pizza.

How's that for deja vu.  Exact one month ago, Feb 9 not Mar 9, another Justin spawned exactly the same language except for FEB => MAR and BIEBER => TIMBERLAKE (and taking out "beliebers," since if there are Timber Lakers -- Basketball players with axes??? -- I'm not aware).

RECAP

COLD OPEN -- A not very interesting Elton John singing at the funeral of Hugo Chavez.

Note -- for the real HC when he visited NY and the NYFF for a screening of Oliver Stone's "SOUTH OF THE BORDER"  see: http://qporit.blogspot.com/2009/09/oliver-stones-south-of-border.html

MONOLOGUE -- Justin joins the 5 Timer's club: Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Dan Ackroyd (Bartender, original cast), Chevy Chase, with Martin Short (waiter - making the Three Amigos), Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen and Tom Hanks.  Super-reunion!

A good-looking Bud Light commercial with JT

A nice commercial for Vikings -- but it's on a night with so much competition it can't even fit on a DVR.

DATING GAME SHOW -- with 2 wild and crazy guys -- Bachelor 1 --("O I'm gonna lose.")  --A fun sketch.

Lunk alarm - Part of this commercial is almost good enough to be part of a sketch. (The rest, not so much.)

SAUSAGE DEPOT -- vs. vegan-ville  ("You're gonna remember how good a salami is")

NUVA BLING -- Say goodbye to the same old birth control.

MUSIC -- Ladies and Gentlemen "Make some noise!"

So far, the theme of the night is not so much funny as just Fun!

WEEKEND UPDATE -- Good jokes. STEFAN - "writing for SMASH" -- Funnier than usual - Donald Duck having a  nightmare --

THE TALES OF SOBER CALIGULA -- Didn't work.

MAINE JUSTICE -- The New England Everglades...  This sketch is the best kind of completely crazy.

Ad - Revolution is returning March 25.

MOVIE PREVIEW -- Having it all...

CHAMPAGN (???) SHAMPAN ??? MOET & CHANDON ad by porn stars -- very funny sketch.

This was a good show with lots of energy and spirit!  The last sketch was the funniest.  Maine Justice was crazy.  With Adam Samberg & Jay-Z added to the alumni in the 5-Timers club, this was one massive reunion.

JUSTIN BIEBER

HOST And! MUSICAL GUEST

Justin Bieber has the unusual honor of being both the host and the musical guest on SNL. Fans (Beliebers, or in French, LeBiebers) waited in the cold and snow for tickets. According to reports, the waiting hordes had some support from SNL and JB himself with soup and pizza.

Justin is probably the biggest star ever to have been discovered from his postings on YouTube. His home-made postings were spotted when he was a young teen. Now 18 (Next birthday, March 1.) he continues to be a major force on Twitter with tens of millions of followers and a hefty percentage of the total traffic.

Some promos for the show:

Recap:

A good show.  Justin was a game host -- he was in many sketches; he acted well and naturally; he parodied himself; he only broke up out of character once, and why not, it was a funny moment.

Several sketches were not just just non-verbal comedy. -- I'd call them anti-verbal.

There were lots and lots and lots of ads, adds, addds, addddddddds..........

Keenan Thompson is becoming more and more of a solid, funny presence from show to show.

COLD OPEN -- An anti-verbal sketch.  An accurate and sometimes hilarious description of TV anchors with nothing to say and airtime to fill -- in this case sportscasters during the superbowl blackout. Best line: when the clock in the stadium stops, do we stop aging?

MONOLOGUE -- Justin was good.  Whoopi was a nice surprise. (But I'm not fond of people wearing religious necklaces on stage.)

SOAP NET - THE CALIFORNIANS -- Another anti-verbal sketch, as the Californians say nothing except to name the roads they drove on.   This time it was well-directed and despite (or because of?) several actors failing to maintain a plausibly ridiculous accent, it was quite funny.

Lots of Ads Adds Addddds... But I do like the GE commercial (just not too often).

MSG SECURITY - BODY DOUBLES -- A premise ridiculous enough to be funny.  Ellen was the best double (and... they were setting up a joke for later!)

ONLY ON BRAVO - REALITY SPINOFFS -- Wacky ideas. Some funny. Best: "Real House Plants of Beverly Hills"

More ads... But I liked the Buick ad: Every car should have a rear view camera and a super-wide angle side view mirror.  My car has some serious blind spots.

MUSIC -- Justin sang some interesting songs.

WEEKEND UPDATE -- Recently the jokes have been consistently funny. Best line: Is the criteria for a drone strike "a just cause" or "just 'cus"? CHILDHOOD FRIENDS OF RICHARD III was amusing; so was THE ONE BLACK GUY IN EVERY COMMERCIAL (another successful Thompson bit).

GREASE PARODY -- Justin as an 11 year old in love, with no idea what it's all about.

More ads; even one for the Metropolitan Opera.

MILEY CYRUS FAN CLUB -- Well done, with Justin as a Miley Cyrus Fan.  The Ellen joke pays off here.

MEET THE PARENTS AND THE BRO' -- Another anti-verbal sketch. Justin kind of breaks up and loses it here for a moment with Bro' screaming "glice" in his ear.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY FROM JUSTIN BIEBER -- Alas, this sketch did not really work.

BOOKER T WASHINGTON HS VALENTINE'S  (ABSTINENCE) DANCE -- Some funny moments, but the sketch seems underdeveloped.

Overall, Justin's sketches seemed to focus often on parodies of immaturity.  But he was game for all the innuendos, contributed a lot to all the sketches he was in, and was in many.  He did a good job!

SNL - DANA CARVEY & LINKIN PARK

Dana Carvey did a decent job of hosting. He had brief visits from old friends Mike Myers and Jon Lovitz; and not a bad appearance by Justin Bieber (as Justin Bieber) on The Church Lady sketch (but punches were pulled... not even close to Skins). I liked the look of the B&W start of Linkin Park's 2nd set, and the music 'til they started singing -- I've never liked the SNL mix of vocals.

Here's some more notes on the highlights (and the echh-y sketches).

In reverse order, from end to beginning of the show:

=>Wrap-up - Not a bad show tonight, not a great one either.

=>Wrap-up - Dana Carvey has two great looking kids.

=>Embrace Me...
by the fingerlings (??? - 4 fingers?) ... echh. Pointless. (YES. BAD AND ANNOYING IS BAD AND ANNOYING. So what. )

=>Promo for Celebrity Apprentice... that was a sketch, right?

=>Wurtz is a character with character. A winner, consoling losers.

=>Pageant -- Wiig's one word ... "Me!" was the funniest moment in the whole sketch. But the sketch has a real kick. Satire with an edge. Not funny, but edgy.

=>Live with Regis & Kelly ... Not so funny.

=>Bieber & SNL generating about 1000 tweets or more per half hour.

=>Weekend Update - Egypt Winners and Losers, James Franco & Disco Weather rocked on the mark.

=>THE ROOMMATE - Better than the real thing! NOT! Maybe scarier than the real thing in a different way?

=>Celebrity Crisis Center -- Great concept, limp writing, lousy impersonations, except for Eddie Murphy. That man's GOOD!

=>Church Lady. The voice is a little out of practice, but... Still funny, after all these years. Decades, actually.

=>Black Noise commercial. I'll buy it.

=>Monologue... ecch. I don't care for "I'm the best" monologues. This one was especially flat.

=>OMG! it's Wayne's World, back like were all back at 9 yrs old.
