WORLD WAR Z (3D)
& THE BIGSCREEN VR APP
INTRO
Just to be clear, other than that both are films, the only resemblance between WORLD WAR Z (a Zombie film) and THE LOST CITY OF Z (a biographical adventure, and closing night at NYFF 2016) is the letter Z.
In the current, in-person-cinema challenged world, the possibility of using a VR headset to enable large-screen, 3D enabled film viewing at home -- or anywhere! -- is very enticing.
BIGSCREEN VR is a new app on the OCULUS QUEST, and I wanted to try it out. The 2013 3D Zombie film WORLD WAR Z was starting, and I decided to join the viewing.
First, a review of the film, then a review of my experience with BIGSCREEN VR.
(Strictly speaking, “film” is not quite the right word, of course, for a mostly or entirely digital work-flow but, here, we are talking about a feature-length picture for a big screen, and “film” still seems like a better word than “video” or “movie”.)
World War Z is a “standard” Zombie movie, starring Brad Pitt. It is well acted, although only Pitt has much to do; reasonably well plotted, with only a few gaping holes; and fitted out with a huge number of Zombies, created by only slightly more special effects workers. The cinematographer mostly mutes the palette of colors, with only bright reds and the flesh tones of living humans standing out.
REVIEW: WORLD WAR Z (3D)
World War Z is a “standard” Zombie movie, starring Brad Pitt. It is well acted, although only Pitt has much to do; reasonably well plotted, with only a few gaping holes; and fitted out with a huge number of Zombies, created by only slightly more special effects workers. The cinematographer mostly mutes the palette of colors, with only bright reds and the flesh tones of living humans standing out.
I liked the scene where a special officer in Mossad explains to Pitt why he believed someone’s story that there would be an invasion of Zombies (technically, “the undead”). It could be a hard concept to sell without fine acting, and the film could fall apart if the officer’s explanation seems ridiculous. The scene worked for me.
Structurally, the plot resembles a mystery format, or a scavenger hunt. Each segment (somewhere in the world) of an investigation into a Zombie epidemic reveals a clue that leads to some other part of the world. (Repeat.) At the end, the clues add up to a solution. Each piece of the investigation, structurally, resembles some kind of peril that Pitt must overcome. (A bit like “Perils of Pauline Pitt”.)
The plot is basically sound, but occasional strokes of “luck” propel the plot forward. For example, after a horrific airplane crash, only Brad and his companion survive. And, wow! the plane crashed just close enough to the place where he was going that he can walk the rest of the way! BUT… he has a shard of metal penetrating his midsection – in the front and thru and out the back – roughly where some crucial organs usually sit. HOWEVER! he’s still able to walk the half mile or so to his destination, with just a little assistance from his companion (whose hand – by the way -- Pitt had recently amputated… long story).
Although the film came out in 2013, from a 2006 novel, it does have resonance with the current pandemic. The Zombie affliction is caused by a bite, has a short incubation period (a few seconds in this case), and social distancing from infected Zombies is very important! I won’t give any “spoilers” away, but Pitt’s unusual method of vaccination is not a cure. (Any vaccine for COVID-19 that is released to the public, hopefully, is less risky than Pitt’s.)
Interestingly, one resonance with current events that is common in movies about major catastrophes, that is not present here, is the familiar trope (for example in Jaws, or 24) that the government is interfering with the investigation (although they are callous and do not keep one big promise).
In 2013, there were many possible inspirations for the film, including SARS, Ebola, and many others. Those pandemics, together with films like this, might well have been a warning to prepare for the next possible pandemic – in this case, our current COVID-19.
For me, the most exciting and interesting scene is the opening. It is very well done as a set piece, (although as a piece of story, it could be the opening to any number of catastrophe films). The ending seems to be crying for a sequel. One was planned, (starring Pitt, teamed up with David Fincher as director), but reportedly cancelled because of “budget issues”. Given the current pandemic, and the fact that the film’s substantial gross was more than half a billion dollars, the idea of a sequel may now, fittingly, be undead.

I enjoyed seeing the film, but I was a little disappointed.
First, I got off to a bad start. I bought a ticket to the film when I signed on to BIGSCREEN VR on my computer. Then, when I put my headset on it did not recognize that I had already paid for the film; I had to pay again. So far, I have not gotten a response to my request for a refund.
The screening began with some commercials, before the film. I never liked that in a real theater either.
The film looked good in 3D, and the beginning of the film was exciting.
The screen, however, was not as big as I had hoped. It was not even like an IMAX, much less like a 180 or 360 experience. The QUEST has pretty good resolution but the colors, except for reds, were muted, even a little muddy. I watched the film again (with the FX channel) on a computer screen, and although the colors were still muted, in accord with the Zombie subject matter, the colors and sharpness were significantly better than on the QUEST. (A new VR headset coming soon, the Reverb G2, will have much better resolution.)
After 90 minutes or so, my QUEST suddenly went black from an exhausted battery – no warning. I lost a few minutes of the film before I plugged the QUEST in again. It worked fine plugged in.
The way BIGSCREEN VR works is that some of their “premiere” films are screened in a virtual “screening room” at a particular time (as they are in theaters, as opposed to on-demand). They can be watched either in a private room, or with friends and strangers in a public room.
I was placed in a virtual private room. It was very big for just me. I was lonely.
Later, I moved to a room where there were three other people (avatars, not real people). Two of them started throwing virtual tomatoes and popcorn around. Later, one of them started throwing virtual tomatoes at me. Fortunately, the app does not provide haptic feedback, but it was still unpleasant.
While watching the film I was unable to find the menu to move back to a private room.
I was unable, also, to find an exit button at the end of the film to gracefully return to the OCULUS home page. I had to press buttons frantically until I was ejected.
Despite these problems, BIGSCREEN VR right now is one of the few ways to watch a 3D movie in VR. I will probably try it again. This was the first time I used BIGSCREEN VR. I suspect that I will learn some better ways to navigate in the app after I use it some more.

Notes (2/26/2012, just before midnight on Oscar Night) -- It was a good show. It moved along. It was funny, tho not hilarious. Crystal was an efficient, pleasant host. There were no great moments, but some good ones. Streep and Plummer -- the old timers -- gave the best speeches. THE ARTIST was the big winner. It's a brilliant and tremendously entertaining film. Ironically, this show, THE ARTIST, written, produced and directed by Frenchmen was the only film shot entirely in LA!

THE ARTIST is one of the best films of this year... or any year.
It is a brand new, modern, black & white (mostly), silent (mostly) film about the end of black & white, silent pictures. And love!
The film is chock full (yes, that's probably a vintage-ly accurate expression) of Gallic irony and humor, wisdom, cinematic wizardry, and intelligence. And love of films.
It's a French film, but it has no French (hey, it's silent!), and it was made in Hollywood by an American crew.
It was brilliantly written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius...

...And perfectly executed by a large cast, toplined by the terrific pair of French actors, Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, assisted by a powerful American cast of supporting players.

George Clooney plays an unusually befuddled character in The Descendants, the Closing Night film at the 2011 New York Film Festival (NYFF), and also a featured screening at the 2011 Hamptons International Film Festival (the same weekend)!
Returning home from a more-or-less perpetual business trip because his wife fell into a coma after a boating accident, Clooney must deal with two daughters who are somewhat alien to him, the fate of his wife, and a big decision on how to divest a huge parcel of spectacular, pristine Hawaiian landscape that he is heir to and, most important, the custodian for -- on behalf of his extended family of relatives.
The film is not perfect: the awkwardness of the characters with each other at the beginning is, well, awkward; and parts of the plotting and resolution (without giving away any spoilers, here) seem a little too pat, but over all The Descendants is a very interesting, thought-provoking and entertaining film,
Director Alexander Payne's camera and direction take us into the private as well as the lush Hawaii.

The acting is excellent by all the major characters, and the minor ones too. Three young actors create impressive, strong characters,

Judy Greer is emotionally affecting in her climactic scenes, George Clooney is terrific from beginning to end, and even his comatose wife is convincing, without moving or saying a word. It's funny, but in a film like this, which revolves in part around a silent, motionless woman, it is her presence which determines whether the film can succeed, for she must be believable as the someone who can be at the center of of attention.
And Robert Forster, as the aggrieved father of the comatose wife, mother, and daughter, adds punch.
