THE WORLD'S TOP RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS
Using a rough measure of the number of important contributions to science made by research institutions around the world (based on publications in major journals), and an equally rough measure of the size of the institutions, NATURE MAGAZINE has published a ranking of the total number of “important” contributions to science, and a ranking of the number of “important” contributions relative to its “size” for research institutions around the world.
One result is the importance, and the growing importance of Chinese institutions, and the other is the quality of a number of smaller institutions.

Four Chinese institutions in the top twenty have increased their output more than 5% in the last year, including Nanjing whose output rose more than 10%;
In the US, Yale, and Northwestern have increased their output more than 5% in the last year, while most others have actually decreased.
