THE CLOCK

THE CLOCK

THE CLOCK is a film constructed by editing scenes and fragments from existing, mostly theatrical films from the US mostly, and around the world, into a marathon film taking place over 24 hours, with each scene specific to a specific time of day and synchronized in editing and then in projection to match the exact time of day at which is viewed.

It is designed for “browsers” who will come in, watch for a while and then leave, and perhaps return again -- to sample what films have to say about life at different times of the day.

To be specific about the time, and to facilitate synchronizing the action in the movie with real time, THE CLOCK contains many shots (again, excerpted from existing films) of clocks showing a specific – THE specific – time of day.

Watching the film permits the viewer to meditate on how real life and reel life are shaped by time of day.

As you meditate on time there can be a sense of beginnings, of endings, of suspense -- to the time when some action may happen (the bomb explodes, HIGH NOON, midnight), or to when some action ends (making love until work calls, the morning alarm interrupts a night’s sleep), of time passing (while characters eat breakfast, shop, live, steal), and other facets of time.

While watching, everything happens in the present in real time as you watch, yet there is tension with the time(s) in the past (or future) portrayed in the film clip, the time period defined by when the film clip was created, or when you first saw the film from which it was taken. (Apparently, the LA audience, which probably was more familiar with the films selected than most other audiences, had an especially festive time watching this film and reacting to clips that help frame their own lives.)

There is a sense of contrasts between cultures (separated by place or by time period) and also of the similarities between how very different cultures react to the same time of day.

The film is expertly crafted with transitions sometimes smooth and seamless, other times active and contrasty, with sound carefully engineered, and the selected film clips visually clear and attractive.

The number of clips has never been counted exactly, but each minute seems to have perhaps between 5 and ten, suggesting roughly 7,500 to 15,000 clips in the whole film.

THE CLOCK is being presented at the Museum of Modern Art from Dec 21, 2012 to January 21, 2013. It is presented in a dark room with dark, acoustic curtains and comfortable couches. Admission is free with museum admission, first come first served (with possibly a waiting line to enter if the room is full), then stay as long as you like.

THE CLOCK normally runs during normal MOMA hours. However, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day it will run all night, beginning Dec 31, 2012 at 10:30 AM through Jan 1, 2013 at 5:30 PM, -- and the Museum Café 2 restaurant will offer a special menu (including wine) from 10 PM to 1 AM, and an all night espresso bar.

On subsequent weekends, from Fri, Jan 4 until Monday Jan 21, the film will be shown continuously from 10:30 AM Friday through 5:30 PM Monday.

Updates on visiting THE CLOCK are provided on Twitter @TheClockatMoMa and at MoMa.org/theclock.

SNL -- DEC 15, 2012 -- MARTIN SHORT WITH PAUL MCCARTNEY

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
SNL
MARTIN SHORT WITH PAUL MCCARTNEY
-- DEC 15, 2012 --

http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/

Paul McCartney was a much better than average musical guest.  Other than that (and one sketch), it was not a terrific show.

Before the program started, I was wondering how they would acknowledge the ongoing devastation from the hurricane (and Paul just sang at the huge 12/12/12 benefit) aggravated by the terrible tragedy at the school:

I wrote: "Well, I wonder how SNL will deal with the current tragic climate.  It took a while to come back after 9/11.

'This school shooting is a tragedy that demands a change in the way we deal with guns and how we prevent violence. Will SNL acknowledge the reality of the country's mood? They usually are very sensitive to news. I wonder how they will react."

The answer is that they ignored it completely, except possibly for the choice of the COLD OPEN song.  The show seemed to have been put together before the shooting, and never changed.  While there may be too much of the same simplistic, overly sentimental, repetitious sanctimonious cliches on the news, there is always room for a sincere and honest and simple reaction to important events.  I was a little disappointed.

Here a short recap of the show:

COLD OPEN: A sweet Silent Night, Holy Night by the New York Children's Chorus At first I thought this was in response to the news, but it seemed to just be a Christmas Song. Perhaps it was a tribute to the children.

MONOLOG: SNL (cast and host) alumni hanging out in the hall. Plus a lascivious Christmas song, with Martin Short kissing almost anyone he could reach.

TONY BENNETT: A slimmed down Alec Baldwin doing a terrible impression of Tony Bennett on a pointless talk-show type sketch.

PREPARING THE GYNECOLOGIST FOR THE ROYAL VISIT FROM KATE MIDDLETON: a slightly annoying Martin Short, but some very funny moments.

THE ACTOR'S STUDIO "YOU'RE A RAT BASTARD CHARLIE BROWN": Not funny. Not a very good parody. Not very good impressions.

PAUL MCCARTNEY - MY VALENTINE: It was nice.  (But) This may be the saddest Valentine's song ever.

It turns out that Paul directed a music video of this song with Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp.  It wasn't on SNL, but here it is from YouTube.  (Recap continues below):

WEEKEND UPDATE: Moderately funny jokes.  No zingers.  I can't believe there is no mention at all of either of this week's events -- the 12/12/12 concert or the shooting. JACOB THE BAR MITZVAH BOY was a lame effort.  However, THE GIRL AT THE PARTY YOU WISH YOU HADN'T STARTED A CONVERSATION WITH was the winning sketch of the night.  Great writing, concept and execution.  Looks like a new character for SNL.

WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?:  I don't get this sketch at all. Not at all.

MCCARTNEY - MAMA SET ME FREE: Lots and lots of energy!

CATCHING UP AT RESTORATION HARDWARE: Kind of a lame sketch; same kind of idea as the old "I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS" but without origiinal, funny lines.

PAGEANT AUDITIONS: Martin Short singing, insults Paul McCartney telling him he can't sing.  Not funny or pleasant; but then it morphs into a final Christmas song by McCartney & the Kids.

SNL -- DEC 8, 2012 -- JAMIE FOXX WITH NE-YO

JAMIE FOXX WITH NE-YO

SNL
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/

DEC 8, 2012

Jamie Foxx will be hosting Saturday Night Live (SNL) tonight, with musical guest Ne-Yo. Here's an intro to Jamie Foxx & Ne-Yo. See here -- after the show -- for a recap.

RECAP:

COLD OPEN -- Hilarious start, but a nightmare scenario in which Obama gives the GOP everything they want in order to spare Boehner the dissing he gets from the GOP every time he hints at a tax increase.

MONOLOG -- With a theme of "How Black Was That," the show gets off to an edgy start.

QUIZ SHOW #1 -- BITCH --  It had a good idea: questions that had no answer; but it was kind of a mean spirited sketch that misfired.

From here on things got softer, often sillier, usually funny.

MICHIGAN STATE -- An update on the SNL staple of weird, incompetent and strange TV/Cable/Public Access shows worked for once because of Jamie's energy and sense of humor (and costume).

NE-YO's first song was backed up by an energetic and entertaining dance ensemble.  The second song, later, was quiet and performed simply.

WEEKEND UPDATE -- In keeping with the spirit of the night, the jokes were funnier than usual.  MRS CLAUS had a nice sketch.  It wasn't quite a classic, but it was very good.  The chocolate DING DONG was tasty too.

QUIZ SHOW #2 -- DYLAN MCDERMOT OR DERMOT MOLRONEY -- was a hoot.

TREE PIMP was funny.

MAINE JUSTICE was kind of a loony sketch but it really worked.

SWAROVSKI CRYSTALS -- An ad for real fake diamonds made of plastic, was ridiculous and very funny, sending up those late night ads populated by ridiculously amateur spokespeople..

It seemed to be a show that relied on great concepts less, and funny sketches more than usual. Jamie Fox was a good host.

BALLET HISPANICO WITH PAQUITO D'RIVERA AT THE APOLLO

BALLET HISPANICO
WITH PAQUITO D'RIVERA
AT THE APOLLO

The distinguished dance company, Ballet Hispanico “explores, preserves, and celebrates Latino cultures through dance,” maintaining a professional company that presents dance programs all over the world, a school of dance in New York City, and educational and outreach programs.

Last weekend, the company performed an ambitious, entertaining and interesting program at the Apollo Theater.

At this one-night-only event, they presented three dances, all premieres. This was the first (and, for now, only) performance of these dances, dances which combine intricate solo, duo, and company choreography to music. (To me, it seems far more complicated than a dramatic presentation, yet theater gets a whole lot of “previews” before they “open”, while this dance company goes live and public on the first and only night and carries it all off beautifully without any conspicuous hitch.)

The first dance was a tango inspired piece that featured topless male dancers with hats, and stark sleek ladies. The color palette was all black & flesh.

In the second piece, the style went from the severe order of the tango, to controlled and visually rich chaos, beginning with dancers listening to sound-only-they-could-hear on earphones, each in their own universe, costumes all over the place. The dancers coalesced to form intricate and striking stage pictures from time to time.

The final piece was performed to terrific live jazz by the Paquito D’Rivera Ensemble. This dance featured some notable duos, of which the most interesting, and the highlight of the evening, was an improvisation by Paquito -- onstage! -- and a solo dancer.

The first and second dance presentations were each followed by a long intermission, and the audience, which seemed to be at a big party, seemed to enjoy every social minute of the intermission. (And, indeed, as it turned out, much of the audience was there for a celebration... upstairs in a ballroom at the Apollo after the show.)

The (legendary) Apollo is a quite lovely theater, easy to get to (and park nearby) on 125 street in Harlem. (And, as noted, they can host huge receptions as well as present major stage shows.)

One of the holiday films we're most looking forward to will be Tom Cruise's new film JACK REACHERThe Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC) has seized this opportunity to host An Evening with Tom Cruise, a special screening of JACK REACHER and then a retrospective of his films.  Here are some notes on this exciting program:

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will host An Evening with Tom Cruise on Monday, December 17th, taking a look at some of Cruise’s most iconic character work in a conversation with moderator and New York Film Festival Director of Programming, Kent Jones.

The event will be followed by a (well publicized) “sneak” preview screening of Cruise’s new film JACK REACHER, in which he plays a tough ex-military investigator out for justice – a character that audiences have come to love from the three-time Academy Award® nominated actor.

Tickets are $50 and $35 and all proceeds from the event will go to the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 50th Anniversary Fund, which supports the new education program and emerging filmmaker initiatives. Tickets go on sale Monday, December 10th. The event will be held at the Rose Theater, (5th floor of the Time Warner Center, Broadway and 60th street).

Visit Filmlinc.com for more information.

“Tom’s body of work is defined by the bold characters he plays so brilliantly and his collaborations with filmmaking’s most venerable directors. Tom consistently chooses smart and exciting projects and we are pleased to present audiences with a first look at his newest role, Jack Reacher,” said FSLC Executive Director Rose Kuo. “We are honored to host this exciting evening and to support our 50th anniversary fund to benefit education and emerging artists.”

An Evening with Tom Cruise will kick off a film retrospective with a selection of Cruise’s most beloved characters. The retrospective, ALL THE RIGHT MOVES: THE FILMS OF TOM CRUISE, runs December 18-20th and will include a seven-film tribute to some of his most extraordinary work: BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, JERRY MAGUIRE, THE LAST SAMURAI, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, RAIN MAN, RISKY BUSINESS and TOP GUN.

After his big screen debut in ENDLESS LOVE (1981), Cruise made such an impression on director Harold Becker in the military drama TAPS (1981) that it inspired Becker to give him a larger role in the film, that of Cadet Captain David Shawn. Cruise’s performance in TAPS effectively launched his career, leading him to be cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s THE OUTSIDERS (1983) alongside a group of celebrated young actors that collectively became known as “the brat pack”.

Since then, from his iconic slide across the floor of a suburban Chicago living room in RISKY BUSINESS (1983) to his considerably riskier footwork atop a Dubai skyscraper in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE—GHOST PROTOCOL (2011), Cruise has spent a remarkable three decades as one of the world’s most popular movie stars, and one of its most adventurous and unpredictable actors.

An instant pop culture sensation for his role as the fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in TOP GUN (1986), Cruise quickly cemented his serious dramatic credentials opposite Dustin Hoffman in RAIN MAN (1988) and in Oliver Stone’s BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY (1989) where he earned his first Academy Award® nomination as well as a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Cruise has since earned two more Academy Award® nominations – Best Actor for Cameron Crowe’s JERRY MAGUIRE (1996) and Best Supporting Actor for Paul Thomas Anderson’s MAGNOLIA (1999), with both films earning him Golden Globes for the critically acclaimed performances.

His career has been singular in working with the most noteworthy directors such as Coppola, Stone, Stanley Kubrick in EYES WIDE SHUT (1999), Steven Spielberg in MINORITY REPORT (2002) and WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005), and Michael Mann in COLLATERAL (2004), while breaking box-office records in blockbusters like THE LAST SAMURAI and the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series.

Tickets for the Monday, December 17th conversation and Jack Reacher screening will be available beginning Monday, December 10th. The event will be held at the Rose Theater, on the 5th floor of the Time Warner Center (Broadway and 60th street). Tickets will be sold for $50 and $35, and all proceeds from the event will go to the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 50th Anniversary Fund, which supports the new education program and emerging filmmaker initiatives. Visit www.filmlinc.com for additional information.

A Special Two Film Package is available for the films in the retrospective, ALL THE RIGHT MOVES: THE FILMS OF TOM CRUISE, running from December 18-20th. Tickets are on sale today: visit Filmlinc.com.

All screenings will take place at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam).
